Ryan Garcia stops Conor Benn in round 2, Opetaia routs Mikaelyan
Ryan Garica successfully defended the WBC World welterweight title last Saturday in quick fashion after stopping Conor Benn in the second round.
This win marked Garcia’s first title defence after beating Mario Barrios to claim the title earlier this year.
Before the fight, predictions were evenly divided on who would win.
A big factor in picking the winner was the weight class. Conor Benn had not made the 147 pound limit since 2022.
Though Benn did make weight, things did not go his way on fight night as he succumbed to the hooks and uppercuts of Garcia.
In the co-main event, Jai Opetaia extended his undefeated record to 31-0 after knocking Noel Mikaelyan out in the ninth round.
Opetaia controlled the fight for the most part, despite getting wobbled in the seventh round.
He is the new WBA Regular cruiserweight champion and has simultaneously defended his Ring and Zuffa belts.
In his post fight speech, Opetaia called out David Benavidez who was in attendance.
Benavidez currently holds the WBO and WBA Super Cruiserweight titles.
The pair verbally agreed to fight in September 2027.
Also on the card, Andres Cortes extended his win streak to 26-0 after beating former world champion Mark Magsayo.
