Richard Oblitey Commey, the former IBF world champion is set for a ring return after his unanimous decision defeat to Ukrainian Vasiliy Lomachenko back in December last year.

The Streetwise Global Ambassador who still harbours the ambition of becoming a world champion again made this disclosure in an interview.

The Ghanaian is going to begin a new chapter in the junior welterweight / super lightweight division (140lbs) after having achieved his goal in the lightweight division (135lbs)

“I have spoken with my manager and we have decided that now is the right time to move to 140-pounds. I have spent over 10 years at 135 and achieved my ultimate goal of winning a world title and headlined in some iconic venues including Madison Square Garden and The MGM Grand so there is nothing left for me at lightweight.” He said.

“The obvious benefit is that I won’t have to kill myself trying to make 135, as we all know the older you get the more difficult it gets to make weight. Not to say I struggled but it just got a little harder naturally. The biggest benefit is that I will be able to chase another dream of being a two-weight world champion.” Commey further explained.

Commey did reiterated that, he’s not done yet with the sweet science, and is looking forward to become a two-division world champion and further move up to 147lbs (Welterweight).

He disclosed that he’ll be fighting hopefully in July as he awaits promoter Lou Dibella and Top Rank. As to who the former world champion will be facing in his new found chapter, its not yet known.

Currently, UK’s Josh Taylor (19-0, 13KOs) is the Undisputed champion, possessing the WBA, IBF, WBC and WBO Super lightweight titles and with ‘The Tartan Tornado’ confirming he’s ‘move-up’ to the welterweight division, we take a look at the top 3 ranked boxers (140 lbs) in the various organisations

International Boxing Federation (IBF)

  1. Jeremias Ponce (29-0, 19KOs)
  2. Sobriel Matias (18-1, 18KOs)
  3. Liam Paro (22-0, 13KOs)

Against Commey who sits on the 8th, 10th and 12th in the WBC, IBF and WBO respectively, according to the lightweight rankings, the Jamestown native must look to have a decent opponent in his Jr. welterweight debut, for a world title shot.

Keep watching this space for more details as his promoters workout an opponent for the former world champion.
