LAS VEGAS — Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum has launched a blistering verbal assault on boxing’s biggest superstar, declaring that former undisputed super-middleweight king Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez is officially a spent force in the sport.
Speaking directly with The Ring, the 94-year-old Top Rank founder pulled zero punches regarding Alvarez’s upcoming career direction, completely writing off the Mexican icon’s status as an elite pound-for-pound fighter.
“Alvarez belongs on the golf course, not in the ring,” Arum fired out. “I think Alvarez is finished.”
The Crawford Fallout and the October ClashArum’s comments arrive as the landscape at 168 pounds undergoes massive structural shifts. Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) enters the latter half of 2026 looking to rebuild after dropping his undisputed crown to the smaller Terence Crawford, who jumped up two full weight classes to comfortably outpoint the Mexican star.
Following that loss and subsequent left elbow surgery, Canelo is now scheduled to make his highly anticipated return this October against undefeated wrecking ball Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs).
While oddsmakers have installed Canelo as a solid -300 betting favorite, Arum—who co-promotes Mbilli—vehemently believes the odds are completely backwards.
”I have no idea if Alvarez should retire or not, but I like Mbilli in the fight,” Arum stated. “I’m not surprised that Alvarez looked bad against Crawford. Terence is a great fighter. Canelo has been a tough guy and a good fighter, but not a great fighter on the level of Crawford.”
A Division in Transition
For the first time since 2015, Canelo finds himself entering a fight camp as a contender without a world title belt. With Crawford officially announced as retired and Mbilli elevated to full champion status, the October showdown carries monumental stakes.
Mbilli’s relentless, high-volume pressure style has routinely terrorized opponents. If Arum’s harsh assessment holds true, the boxing world could witness a definitive passing of the torch this fall—sending Canelo permanently to the fairway while Mbilli takes full custody of the super-middleweight division.
