Every four years athletes from former British colonies united by humanity, equality and destiny come together to compete in multiple sports events. This year’s edition is hosted by Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Ghana has participated in the Commonwealth Games since the 1954 edition. It’s most successful years are 1962, 1966, and 1974 where in each of these tournaments Team Ghana won 9 medals.

Ghana has won a total of 57 medals (15 gold, 18 silver and 24 bronze).

Boxing is Ghana’s most successful sport. Over the years, 32 medals have been won through boxing of the 57.

In Ghana’s last 2 appearances, boxing earned the sole bronze medals (2018 and 2014) for Team Ghana.

2022 looks hopeful with 9 boxers representing Ghana in the boxing discipline, competing in 8 weight classes for the men’s event and 1 female event.

This squad is made up of Ghana’s first female boxing medalist Ornella Sathoud, who will be making history as the first female boxer to represent Ghana at the Commonwealth Games.

In spite of the challenges the team faced prior to their trip, Ghanaians on social media appears to have started showing support.

The boxers have started sharing images of their travel experience online ahead of the competition day.

Ghana’s Sports Minister, Hon. Mustapha Ussif while addressing parliament has emphasised on the importance of the Commonwealth Games for Ghana’s development and international relations.

In his own words

“Mr. Speaker, Ghana has been an integral part of the Commonwealth, and for over 6 decades since our maiden participation in the Games, we have been part of a union which has always brought together a third of the world’s population to promote friendship through sports,”

He further encouraged Ghanaians to rally behind the team as they aim to bring glory to Ghana our Homeland.
