🇬🇭 African Games Boxing Tournament in Accra, Ghana, March 15-22

WILL THE BUKOM MAGIC INSPIRE GHANA BOXERS WIN CROWN?
▫️ Five Ghana boxers are in the semi-finals and nine have been eliminated

Bukom, a suburb in the west of Accra near Jamestown, is the cradle of boxing in Ghana.

This is where Bukoma Boxing Arena lies, and that’s where the African Games boxing tournament is taking place.

Boxing greats such as Azumah Nelson, D.K.Poison and Ike Kotey are all products of this fishing community.

So, will the Ghanaian boxers taking part in the ongoing African Games be inspired by this venue with rich boxing history to win the boxing team title for the first time?

For all its boxing prowess, Ghana has yet to win the African Games boxing overall crown. To some hardcore followers of boxing in Ghana, it will be shameful if Ghana does not win the boxing crown in Bukom.

“It’s like allowing a man to beat you at your own bedroom infront of your wife,” one ardent fan told me on phone.

Indeed the Ghanaian boxers are under intense pressure to make an impact at home.

So far things are looking good for the hosts with five boxers in the semi-finals. They are female minimumweight Janet Aquah, male minimumweight Mohamed Aryeetey, flyweight Theo Alottey, Commonwealth Games silver medallist lightweight Joseph Commey and cruiserweight Abubakar Kamoko.

The number of semi-finalists is likely to swell if Olympic bronze medallist Samuel Takyi and World Championships quarter-finalist bantamweight Amadu Mohammed win their fights today, March 19.

Ghana entered 16 boxers in the African Games. Nine of them have been booted out of the ring with seven remaining.

Will the seven lift the spirits of Ghana fans or they’ll accept to be bullied in their bedrooms by the visitors?
