The much awaited bout between former IBF world lightweight champion Richard Oblitey Commey and former unified (WBC & WBO) super lightweight champion is almost here with just three days to go.

With Richard Commey (30-4-1, 27KOs) determined to become a two-weight division champion, Boxinghana.com had an exclusive interview with his manager Michael Amoo-Bediako Snr who doubles as the CEO of Streetwise Management via zoom with our reporter Josiah Quaye.

Amoo-Bediako revealed that preparations towards the big fight has gone really well, sparing and trying hard diligently as always and therefore assures that Commey is looking good ahead of the super lightweight clash.

When quizzed on the positives Team Commey has taken from his last two fights; losing to Lomachenko and drawing with Pedraza, he explained that, Commey deserves a lot of credit after going 12 rounds with a top opponent in Lomachenko who is ranked in the top 5 fighters in the world.

He also reiterated that Commeys recent fight after facing Loma was his first fight at 148lbs versus a former world champion in Jose Pedraza, which wasn’t an easy one for the Ghanaian.

He added, “Richard equipped himself very very well, it was unfortunate for the card cos Richard was way ahead on the score card and he really got cut and he took his foot off the pedal because he didn’t want to get caught because blood was pouring into his eyes and couldn’t see and it ended up to getting him a draw. Had he not got the cut, he would have gone on to win if not stop Pedraza.”

On Commey being 6years older than Ramirez

“The age doesn’t really matter. It depends how you prepare and it depends how you live your life, if you live your life in a professional way, do the right things, then your age shouldn’t come into it when you come into a fight like this.”

On whether a knockout should be expected

“In terms of knockouts, in terms of strategies, they’re both very experienced fighters, both former world champions, both elite level fighters so you don’t go looking for the knockout. You strategize and you prepare yourself carefully and you try to weigh your opponent down, and if the knockout comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, you prepare for the twelve rounds”.

On what Commey should look out for in Ramirez

“Well, you know, he [Ramirez] is an elite fighter; he’s a former unified world champion and in that way he’s only lost his titles to Josh Taylor who was undefeated and who won all 4 titles so he’s very experienced, very skillful, and you have to respect what he’s done in the game. So Richard will be very patient, diligent and like I said he’s trained very very carefully for this fight and it will be a great fight.

“Styles makes a fight and I think these two will provide a great fight for the fans to watch”.

What next for Commey if he wins?

“Well this fight is for the WBC eliminator for the title so we are hoping that Richard comes out victorious, pray to God that he does, then we will push him for the world title after this fight”.

Michael Amoo-Bediako on an end note thanked all Ghanaians for the support and revealed that Commey is grateful for the support and all the messages their receiving from Ghana.

“He [Commey] is a very very proud Ghanaian, and he carries the flag very highly and dear to his heart and he’s hoping for victory so that he can help raise the profile of Ghana as he’s done before.” Concludes Amoo-Bediako Snr.

The fight will headline the Top Rank promoted event from the Save Mart Arena, Fresno, California, USA to be aired on ESPN this Saturday, March 25.

Boxing Ghana wishes Richard Commey and his entire team victory come Saturday night.
