Under the bright lights of the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night, Teofimo Lopez silenced his critics and cemented his place in boxing history, overcoming blood and adversity to claim the WBA welterweight world title against Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
Stepping into the ring seven months after a devastating loss to Shakur Stevenson, Lopez was moving up to the 147-pound division for the very first time. Across from him stood his former sparring partner, Romero, a heavy-handed champion making his first title defense and eager to score a signature knockout.
For the opening four rounds, Lopez delivered a masterclass in ring generalship. Bouncing effortlessly on his toes, he established a sharp, commanding jab that kept the dangerous Romero off-balance and unable to set his feet.However, the fight exploded into chaos in the fifth round. Romero caught Lopez with a stinging counter left hook that split the skin above Teofimo’s right eye.
With blood streaming down his face, Lopez was rocked moments later by a looping right hand that sent him wobbling back into the ropes. Sensing a finish, Romero surged forward, but Lopez showed the heart of a champion — ducking under the follow-up barrage, clearing his head, and navigating the round to safety.
“He hit me with a shot that woke me up,” Lopez said post-fight. “I told myself right then: You ain’t gonna take me out. It’s not that easy.”
Rather than engaging in an unsafe brawl, Lopez adjusted brilliantly over the second half of the fight. Bleeding but composed, he systematically dismantled Romero’s offense, pumping a total of 62 landed jabs and forcing the champion to miss wildly down the stretch. Romero was limited to single-digit landed punches across nearly every round in the final half of the bout.
When the 12 rounds concluded, the judges handed down a majority decision: 114-114, 115-113, and 116-112 in favor of the challenger.With the victory, Lopez officially becomes a three-division world champion, proving that his career is far from over.
“If you lose and you come back, you never lost because you’re a winner,” an emotional Lopez stated in the ring. “It’s about never giving up.”
