The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has secured the hosting rights for the 2028 African Olympic Boxing Qualification Tournament, marking a significant milestone for Ghanaian boxing and the nation’s growing ambitions on the international sporting stage.
World Boxing has selected Ghana’s bid to stage the prestigious continental qualification event, which will provide African boxers with an opportunity to compete for places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The tournament is proposed to take place in Accra from August 13–22, 2027, bringing some of Africa’s leading amateur boxers, coaches, officials, and national federations to Ghana.
The successful bid represents a major achievement for the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), under the leadership of its President, Dauda Fuseni, and reflects the Federation’s commitment to positioning Ghana as a leading destination for international amateur boxing.
In communicating the successful bid, World Boxing Director of Events Paulo Ferreira expressed enthusiasm about bringing the Olympic qualification tournament to Ghana and working closely with the Ghana Boxing Federation to deliver a successful competition.
Beyond the sporting spectacle, hosting the continental qualifier would present a tremendous opportunity to strengthen Ghana’s boxing infrastructure, develop local technical expertise, attract international attention, and inspire the next generation of Ghanaian boxers.
For Ghana’s national boxing teams, particularly the Black Bombers and the Black Hitters, the prospect of competing on home soil during a crucial stage of Olympic qualification would provide additional motivation as preparations intensify toward Los Angeles 2028.
The achievement would also offer an important platform for government, corporate partners, sporting institutions, and the wider boxing community to unite behind a common objective: restoring Ghana’s prominence in international amateur boxing.
