Tanzania will not participate in the Women’s World Boxing Championships set for Istanbul May 8-20.

The secretary-general of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania, Lukelo Wilillo said they’ve been forced to sidestep the Istanbul event because the five boxers earmarked for the World Championships are currently undergoing military training.

“They got permanent employment in the armed forces, and work comes first, that’s their future,” said Wilillo.

Among the boxers who had been selected is promising Universal Boxing Organisation super-flyweight champion Zulfa Macho (pictured) who is unbeaten in four fights as a pro.

“Zulfa was in the process of returning to amateur boxing,” said Wilillo.

With Tanzania out, member countries of East African Community taking part are Kenya, DRC and Burundi. The Kenyans have 10 boxers, DRC five and Burundi one.

Below are the five Tanzanian boxers who had been picked for the World Championships but have pulled out

  1. Zulfa Macho

  2. Beatrice Ambrose

  3. Sarafina Fusi

  4. Halima Mohamed

  5. Kuruthumu Athmani
