Dana Kofi defeats Raimi Isiaka to win WBO Africa title

23-year-old boxer Dana Kofi became the WBO Africa Super Welterweight champion on Friday after defeating Nigerian veteran boxer Raimi Isiaka by a 7th round TKO.

The bout was the main event of the Cabic Pound for pound showdown at Cleaver House, Accra.

Following several tense exchanges, Isiaka suffered a cut above his left eye that needed medical attention in round 5.

Shortly after the 7th round began, the bleeding worsened, prompting referee Roger Barnor to bring in medics and, based on the doctor’s advice, stop the fight and award the victory to Dana Kofi.

Dana entered the bout riding a seven-fight knockout streak and had the home court advantage against his Nigerian counterpart.

The proud representative of Konkomba, walked into the ring alongside cultural dancers and drummers in traditional headpieces, showcasing his culture.

At the first bell, Dana started off with excessive showboating with little attention to his defence.

In the third round, however, a precise cross from Isiaka woke Dana up, causing him to pursue a more calculated approach, particularly with a major regional title on the line.

Isiaka on the other hand, was the more disciplined boxer, sticking to his basics and possibly winning a few rounds on the judges’ scorecards.

However, a cut on his eye ended his performance prematurely in the seventh round of a 12-round fight.

Isiaka was visibly upset with the result, believing he could keep going despite the bleeding.

With this win, Dana Kofi will climb the African super welterweight rankings, positioning himself for high-profile fights in the future.

Also on the night, Emmanuel Mankatah Sackey defeated Ezekiel Annan to claim the WBO Africa Lightweight title, while Samuel Opaogun won the WBA Africa Gold Welterweight title after Jesse Lartey was forced to retire on the stool in the fourth round due to a leg injury.
