The IBA, which runs the championships at the Stade des Martyrs gymnasium until 1 November, has made prize money a feature of its continental events. Figures cited for Kinshasa are $20,000 for gold, $10,000 for silver and $5,000 for bronze in each of the 25 men’s and women’s weight classes, though organisers had not publicly confirmed the final amounts. Under the IBA’s standard split, half of each prize goes to the boxer, a quarter to the coach and a quarter to the national federation.
For a medal-winning Ghanaian bronze, that would mean $2,500 for the boxer and $1,250 each for the coach and the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF). By Sammy Heywood Okine
