GHANA’S SENA AGBEKO GUNNING FOR PROFESSIONAL BOXER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Current US-WBC Super Middleweight Champion, Ghana’s own Sena Agbeko, who stays true to his “African Assassin” sobriquet is in contention for the Best Professional Boxer Award in the Boxing Ghana Awards 2022.

Sena is seeking to crown what has already been a largely serendipitous campaign this year by winning the award.

The hard punching boxer began the year on a blistering note, blasting out Apollo Thompson (19-4) in the seventh round. He proceeded to score a delectable stoppage of a formidable Winfred Harris Jnr (22-1-1) in the ninth round at the Sioux Convention Center, Iowa, winning the US-WBC Championship in the process.

And on October 21 at Bally’s Atlantic City , Sena, a proud son of Ghana from the Volta region beat highly touted Isaiah Steen convincingly; handing the American his first career defeat in a bout that was aired on Showtime.

By dint of this impressive run, Agbeko who was ranked 212 in the world was able to juggernaut his way into the WBC top 15 rated boxers in the Super Middleweight division.

The soft spoken pugilist’s exploits have not gone unnoticed as he has received plaudits from many a boxing connoisseur including world acclaimed trainer Teddy Atlas who was very critical of Agbeko but had to admit ( after the Isaiah Steen bout) that the US based Ghanaian has undergone massive improvement resulting from the hard work put in over the years. He also commended Agbeko for his humility and tolerance in the face of harsh criticism.

Among boxers also nominated are former WBO champ Isaac Dogboe, George Ashie and Patrick Allotey.

But Sena, who is actually the first African to ever hold the US-WBC CHAMPIONSHIP is earnestly knocking on the doors of a World Title opportunity and believes he stands tall as the Professional Boxer of the Year per the successes chalked in the year under review.
