VISA ISSUES FORCE JERMALL CHARLO OUT OF JULY 26 CLASH IN AUSTRALIA; PROMOTERS SCRAMBLE FOR REPLACEMENT

SYDNEY — Former WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo’s long-awaited return to the ring has hit a definitive roadblock. In a dramatic twist just over a week out from the highly anticipated Errol Spence Jr. vs. Tim Tszyu blockbuster, the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card has lost its co-main event after Australian authorities officially denied Charlo entry into the country.

The 34-year-old American powerhouse was scheduled to battle Australia’s own Koen Mazoudier at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney on Sunday, July 26. However, Charlo’s past legal history in the United States ultimately triggered Australia’s stringent immigration character requirements, forcing promoters to scrap the bout entirely.

A Career Put on Hold—Again

Charlo (34-0, 22 KOs) has faced severe inactivity over the last several years, fighting just once since June 2021. This international assignment was meant to serve as a high-profile relaunch of his career at super middleweight.

The warning signs emerged earlier this week when Charlo failed to board a scheduled flight down under alongside his close friend and stablemate, Errol Spence Jr. While his trainer Ronnie Shields initially expressed confidence that the visa complications would be sorted out in time, Australian immigration officials ultimately held firm.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday morning, a disappointed Charlo confirmed the news to his fans:

”Unfortunately, I will not be able to fight next Saturday. I’ve been training nonstop for the last three months and was ready to make a statement. I want to apologize to all my fans and let them know I will keep training and be back on a PBC event very soon.”

“Gut-Wrenching” News for the Undercard

The late cancellation came as a massive shock to his opponent. Reached by phone shortly after the news broke, a stunned Koen Mazoudier admitted he was completely unaware of the cancellation until Charlo’s social media statement.

“F***, that’s so disappointing. That’s gut-wrenching,” Mazoudier said. “I was sharpening up so beautifully for this fight. But I’m sure the No Limit boys will put somebody in front of me. For now, until I get official confirmation, the mission stays the same.”

Australian promotional outfit No Limit Boxing confirmed the visa denial in a public statement and is actively working against the clock to secure a top-tier replacement fighter to keep Mazoudier on the pay-per-view broadcast.

The Show Must Go On

Despite the heavy blow to the undercard, the marquee attractions remain fully intact. Errol Spence Jr. has landed safely in Sydney ahead of his mega-fight with local hero Tim Tszyu.

Additionally, former unified super bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton has also touched down in Australia after sorting his own minor travel clearances, keeping his high-stakes clash against Liam Wilson locked in.

For Charlo, the visa denial is another complex chapter in a tumultuous few years, leaving his competitive timeline entirely up in the air.
