LOCAL BOXING SET FOR DECEMBER RETURN

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) says the sport has a realistic chance of returning in December if they are to meet the required COVID-9 guidelines by the government.

GBA General Secretary, Patrick Johnson, said the association had written letters to the National Sports Authority (NSA) indicating some possible dates for a return of competitive boxing this month.

The GBA cancelled a scheduled fight last Sunday due to the inability of promoters to meet government’s COVID-19 guidelines in time ahead of the bout.

The fight night, put together by ACE Power Promotions in collaboration with Box Office Sports Promotions, was expected to herald the sport’s return in the COVID-19 era.

Mr Johnson revealed to the Graphic Sports that said his outfit was considering three different dates in December for the sport to return since the suspension of sporting activities last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that the GBA executive was waiting on the NSA to give them the green light on which date to accept in accordance with the agreed COVID-19 guidelines.

“We had to cancel the scheduled bout due to the promoter’s inability to meet COVID-19 guidelines ahead of the bout,” said Johnson.

“The promoters sent us a short notice for the bout but as you know, we are not in normal times and need to meet certain criteria before staging a bout. This cannot happen with the timing of the fight.

“As it stands now, realistically, boxing can only return in December and we are considering three different dates which are yet to be confirmed by the NSA,” he added.
