Sheffield’s undefeated WBC Super Lightweight World Champion, Dalton “Thunder” Smith (19-0, 14 KOs), is officially set to make his long-awaited first title defense.
On October 24, 2026, Smith headlines the Utilita Arena in his hometown against former champion and mandatory challenger Alberto Puello (25-1, 11 KOs) of the Dominican Republic.
The Road to October
Smith captured the WBC 140 lb crown in spectacular fashion back in January, shocking the boxing world by stopping fearsome knockout artist Subriel Matías in five rounds at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
His initial maiden defense against Puello was booked for June 6 in Sheffield, but an elbow/training injury sidelined the 29-year-old champion, forcing a brief postponement. Now fully rehabilitated and back in full training camp, the stage is set for a massive autumn spectacle.
”It was frustrating to pick up the injury when I was in such a good place,” Smith admitted. “The important thing is that I’ve taken the time to recover properly… Becoming world champion was something I dreamed about my whole life, but winning the belt was never the end goal. I want to build a legacy, and that starts with defending it against the best.”

Beyond retaining his WBC belt, there is massive local motivation driving Smith. However, Puello is no simple hurdle.
