TANZANIA PICK EIGHT FOR THE BIG BATTLE IN GHANA

Double duty for Tanzanian top boxer Yusuf Changalawe

Grace Mwakamele dropped from the team

Tanzania’s final team for the African Games in Accra has been named.

Announcing the team today, the President of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) Lukelo Willilo thanked the government for their overwhelming support of the national boxing team.

On the boxers selected, Willilo said: “That’s the quota allocated to boxing by our Sports Ministry taking into account they’re also catering for other disciplines. We thank the government for giving boxing priority among the individual sports.”

Tanzania’s first ever female boxer to win a medal at a major international tournament, Grace Mwakamele, is among the boxers dropped from the final team – six men and two women – to represent Tanzania in the African Games.

Mwakamele, who won a silver medal in last year’s Africa Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon, was among the boxers selected last month in the provisional team of 17 pugilists – 11 men and six women – to undergo residential training at the Filbert Bayi Sports Centre in Kibaha, on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam.

BFT president Lukelo Willilo said Mwakamele’s form has idipped that’s why she has been excluded from the final team named by BFT’s technical bench.

“According to our technical team Mwakamele has not been impressive during training sessions,” Willilo told AFBC Communications

Commonwealth Games and Africa bronze medallist Yusuf Changalawe will do double duty for his country in the World Olympic Qualifiers which start on Sunday in Busto Arsizio, Italy, and in the African Games in Accra, Ghana, from March 8-23.
