DUBLIN — On a night charged with electric energy at the 3Arena, Aaron McKenna etched his name into Irish boxing lore, delivering a disciplined, relentless performance to claim the vacant IBF Middleweight World Championship over Italy’s Etinosa Oliha.
Headlining Zuffa Boxing 10 in his long-awaited home-country professional debut, the undefeated McKenna (21-0, 10 KOs) was forced to dig deep against a fierce, previously unbeaten opponent. Oliha (21-1, 9 KOs) started strong, pressing forward with heavy explosive hooks, but McKenna’s composure under fire turned the tide.
Operating behind a razor-sharp jab, McKenna gradually neutralized Oliha’s power, controlling the range and setting a blistering pace in the mid-to-late rounds. By the champion rounds, the Monaghan native was orchestrating the action, pinning Oliha to the ropes with crisp combination punching and superior conditioning.
When the final bell sounded, all three judges favored the Irishman (116-112, 115-113, 116-112), sending the capacity crowd into a frenzy.”This is what dreams are made of,” an emotional McKenna said in the ring after having the IBF belt strapped around his waist.
“To come back home to Dublin and win a world title in front of my people, there’s no feeling like it on Earth. Oliha brought everything he had, but no one was taking this moment away from me.”
