Boxing is about IQ, not decorations in the gym – Coach Nuhu Norteye Omaboe

Assistant coach of Jamestown Boxing Club, Nuhu Norteye Omaboe says boxing gyms that do not have much equipment but produces very good boxers should be rewarded and supported by the Boxing Federation, National Sports Authority and Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

In an exclusive interview with Yours Truly, he noted that training young boxers is not easy as very often parents do not believe in them, but at the end they become beneficiaries of the rewards of hard work and sacrifice.

Once a while, Your Truly visit boxing gyms and last Tuesday we were at the Jamestown Boxing Club.

Some popular boxers in the gym training very serious were John Quaye aka Magic Man who faced Ishow Speed when the American Influencer and Streamer visited Ghana, Desmond Pappoe who represented Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Africanus Neequaye the National Lightweight Champion.

There were some juvenile and youth boxers also learning the rudiments of the sport.

According to Coach Nuhu, it is not easy managing young boys in boxing at Jamestown because they consider many things before choosing the sport.

He said boxing is not an easy sport as it requires dedication and discipline to succeed

He said boxers must love what they do before they can excel.

He commended Freezy Macbones for his recent achievement in Nigeria where he won the WBO Light Heavyweight title against Godday Adda.

He was however not happy that only two Ghanaians have been rated in the world ranking namely Theophilus Allotey and Michael Abban.

“We pleaded with the boxing authority to find ways to put more Ghanaians in the world ratings” he stressed.

“It is about time to elect pro active leaders who can attend world boxing congresses and speak on behalf of Ghanaian boxers to be rated” he said.
