Former WBO super-bantamweight champion Isaac Dogboe aka ‘The Royal Storm’ has officially announced his retired from the professional boxing.
He was one of Ghana’s most celebrated fighters of his generation.
Dogboe (24w-4l-16ko) competed at the highest level of professional boxing and carried the Ghanaian flag onto the world stage.
In 2018, he made sporting history by defeating Jessie Magdaleno to become the WBO super-bantamweight world champion.
At 23, Dogboe became Ghana’s youngest world boxing champion, a remarkable milestone that cemented his place among the country’s boxing greats.
The victory over Magdaleno was one of the defining moments of Dogboe’s career. Fighting with the aggression, determination and resilience that became synonymous with his style, the Ghanaian stopped Magdaleno in the 11th round to claim the world title.
Dogboe then successfully defended his championship against Japan’s Hidenori Otake, producing another memorable performance by stopping his challenger in the first round.
His reign, however, would soon face its toughest test against Mexican fighter Emanuel Navarrete. Dogboe lost his title to Navarrete before suffering defeat again in their rematch. Rather than allowing the setbacks to define his career, Dogboe embarked on a rebuilding journey, moving up to the featherweight division and continuing to compete against highly regarded opponents.
He recorded notable victories over fighters including Chris Avalos, Adam Lopez and Christopher Diaz, demonstrating his ability to remain competitive at the elite level despite moving into a new weight class.
Dogboe later featured in major world-title contests and eliminators, including his challenge against Cuban star Robeisy Ramirez for the WBO featherweight championship and his WBC final eliminator against Nick Ball.
Throughout his career, Dogboe was recognised not only for his punching power but also for his fearless approach inside the ring. His trademark battle cry, “Neho!”, meaning “to uproot,” became closely associated with his identity as a fighter and his warrior mentality.
Beyond his achievements in the ring, Dogboe has also shown a commitment to Ghanaian boxing and the development of young talent. His journey from Ghana to becoming a world champion provided inspiration to an emerging generation of boxers dreaming of following in his footsteps.
In announcing his retirement, Dogboe also took time to thank the supporters who stood by him throughout his journey. In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, the former world champion expressed his gratitude to God, boxing fans and everyone who supported him over the years.
