Four-Day Amateur Boxing Championship Kicks Off at Bukom Boxing Arena

This week, over 500 young boxers will compete for a spot on the national boxing team (the Black Bombers) with the goal of representing the nation in upcoming continental and international events.

The tournament will take place at the Bukom boxing arena from January 29th to February 1st, starting at 6pm each day.

These boxers will come from over 50 boxing gyms around the country.

These include Fit Square, The Gym, Tamale Boxing Gym, Legion Boxing Gym Seconds Out, Bukom Boxing Gym, and several other gyms.

The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), under the leadership of Dauda Fusieni, has organized the Amateur Boxing Championship aimed at discovering boxing talent across the nation.

Each bout will run for three rounds, with each round lasting three minutes.

Many talented boxers have emerged from the amateur scene. At the Olympics, Ghanaian boxers have secured 4 medals since its inception.

Clement Quartey became the first Ghanaian and African to win a medal at the Olympics after he brought home silver in 1960. Eddie Blay and Prince Amartey earned bronze medals in 1964 and 1972, respectively.

And more recently, Samuel Takyi’s bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics in 2020 put an end to a medal drought of nearly four decades.

Ghana’s history in the Commonwealth and All-African Games is also significant with notable medalists such as Azumah Nelson, Abdul Wahid Omar, Emmanuel Lawson, and Joseph Commey.
