Theophilus Allotey eyes world titles in two weight divisions
Many consider Theophilus ‘Lopez Jr’ Allotey (13-0, 10 KOs) the face of boxing, and the top pound-for-pound boxer in Ghana.
He had an impressive year in 2025, winning three titles and all six of his fights. His most recent outing saw him defeat a top 15 contender in Raquinel for the WBO Global Super Flyweight championship.
Allotey has competed primarily in three weight divisions: super flyweight (52kg), bantamweight (53.5kg), and super bantamweight (55kg).
However, all his title bouts for national, regional, and international honors have taken place at super flyweight with the exception being the bantamweight bout for the WBO Africa title.
As of December 2025, Theophilus holds the number 15 position in the WBO Bantamweight rankings while also being its African and Global Super flyweight champion.
Because the WBO regulations restrict fighters to a ranking in only one weight class, they currently rank Allotey only as a bantamweight, even though he recently defeated a top contender in the super flyweight division.
Allotey also holds the 10th and 13th spots in the IBO and IBF global super flyweight rankings, respectively.
During my conversation with him, Allotey mentioned his desire to become a world champion, regardless of the weight class, though he was currently focusing on the super flyweight division.
“I started at super flyweight, so I have to finish the job before I move to bantamweight,” he said.
He also reaffirmed his goal of becoming Ghana’s first undisputed boxing champion.
To this day, despite great champions like Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, and many others, the coveted status of undisputed has remained out of reach. Allotey believes he can be the first to become undisputed.
“I want to be the first Ghanaian boxer to win all the four belts. That’s my wish, and that’s what I’ve been working for,” Allotey stated.
He intends to capture the super flyweight title first, and subsequently compete for the bantamweight championship.
Even so, he would be open to a title fight at bantamweight if the opportunity presented itself.
Christian Medina, the reigning WBO Bantamweight champion, is scheduled to face Adrian Curiel in Guadalajara, Mexico, this February.
At the top of the division, the competition is intense, with the likes of Seiya Tsutsumi, Takuma Inoue, and Jose Salas Reyes, who are all serious threats.
Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, a top 5 pound-for-pound boxer, currently holds the title in the WBO super flyweight division. Rodriguez is also the titleholder of the WBA and WBC belts.
In a recent interview with Happy FM, Allotey expressed his belief that he was a tough opponent and the one to dethrone Rodriguez.
Allotey appears to be in prime position to challenge for a world title in the next few bouts.
After seven years without a male Ghanaian boxing champion, Theophilus Allotey now has the chance to bring home a belt.
