Mr. Edward Addo is a civil servant who began pursuing a career in boxing as a referee.

He narrated how he started his career in boxing as a referee

“At the time Coach Lamptey was the time keeper and needed assistance, he copted me and since then I have been keeping my eyes on the time during bouts.”

The work of a bellman is very important in boxing as they regulate the rounds, record knock downs and assist the referee.

In Ghana, there is only one full time bell man and that is Mr. Edward Addo. In an exclusive interview with BoxinGhana.com, he explained that over the years, several individuals have drawn close to him to learn the job, but after a few times they stop coming.

He attributed this lack of interest to the perception that time keeping is not as prestigious as a coach or a boxer who are often in the limelight.

“Coach Zicco is one person who has worked with me for a along time and I am confident he has learnt it well” – Edward Addo said.

The work of time keeping according to the experienced bell man is for three (3) persons, one person tracks the rounds and another looks out for knockdowns and the last hits the bell. Mr. Addo currently does all three roles during a tournament.

He advised boxers to come to the ring neatly dressed and ready for action. He explains that boxers should learn the act well so they are able to fight well. He further explains that if you fight well your fans will appreciate your efforts even if you lose.

All interested in learning how to be a bellman can approach Mr. Addo, he’s mostly available at Attoh Quarshie Gym in Accra.
