In what has been a comparatively vibrant year for Ghana boxing both at the amateur and professional levels, Bazooka Promotions owned by African Boxing legend Ike “Bazooka” Quartey staged two events : the first happening in April last year (the debut of Olympic medalist Samuel Takyi).
The second, which took place on December 30, 2022 at the Ga Mashie Hall of the Bukom Boxing Arena was initially planned to be headlined by the National Lightweight Championship between Samuel Takyi and Victor Kuwornu but the former pulled out at the eleventh hour due to severe health challenges.
Albeit boxers on the night gave fight fans a delectable experience.
The first bout, a lightweight contest saw Issah Awal alias “Old Boy” (The Gym) dispatching Daniel Kotey in four rounds.
In a Bantamweight duel Abdul Malik Adjei of the Accra Boxing Club defeated a tough Emmanuel Okine of the Seconds Out Gym.
Bronx Gym’s Jacob Tetteh Laryea also known as “Chorkor Fire” made the people of Chorkor proud as he stopped “Pride of Ashanti” Boateng Agyeman Prempeh in their Super Welterweight clash.
Ebenezer Sowah (2-0) of the Attoh Quarshie Gym engaged debutant Fosu Thompson aka ” Lion Paw” of the Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation in a fierce brawl which resulted in a majority draw. Fosu Thompson who was very impressive on his debut hails from the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana and is handled by Ex WBC two time World Champion “The Marvelous” Nana Yaw Konadu. The decision did not go down well as Fosu’s camp have called for a rematch of the Welterweight combat.
Philip Nguah an army officer with the rank of a corporal who trains out of the Black Panthers Gym won against Francis Aryee in a Super Lightweight fray.
Issah Inusah aka Highlander overcame an early scare before knocking out a game Kwesi Tutu in their Light Heavyweight encounter.
Experienced Delali “Fender” Miledzi proved too much for Kofi Manu as the latter succumbed in round five of their Super Middleweight bout scheduled for eight.
In the final bout of the night Daniel Quaye ( Bronx Gym) and Akotoku Academy product Elvis Mensah gave an electrifying display to the admiration of fans. In the end Quaye, also known as”High Tension” emerged victorious, after which he called out his nemesis Derrick Quaye for a trilogy.
Promoter Clement Quartey thanked patrons and promised an even more exciting show in February.
Mr. Fred Asifo, advisor to Samuel Takyi and Partner of Bazooka Promotions expressed delight and assured that measures were in place to nurture and produce eligible world beaters soon.
Present were “Professor”Azumah Nelson, Ike Bazooka Quartey, Nana Yaw Konadu ( All former world Champions), GBA Capo Abraham Kotei Neequaye, First Vice Rabbon Dodoo, Second Vice Roger Barnor, Technical Director Shadrach Acquaye, Vice Chairman of Promotions Golden Mike Tetteh, Ex Commonwealth Featherweight Champ Percy Oblitei Commey and a galaxy of Boxing Luminaries.
