GBIMC Calls for Police Action Against Boxer-Promoter Ayitey Powers Over Alleged Death Threats

The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has called on the Ghana Police Service to urgently investigate and prosecute professional boxer and promoter Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, following alleged death threats made against the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

In a press release signed by GBIMC Chairman Samir Captan on August 20, 2026, the committee strongly condemned social media posts allegedly made by Ayitey Powers targeting the NSA chief. The GBIMC categorized the alleged online behavior as criminal, asserting that threatening public officials on digital platforms is unacceptable.

The committee further alleged that Ayitey Powers who also operates as a promoter has a documented history of online verbal attacks, citing past insults aimed at GBIMC Chairman Samir Captan and Vice Chairman Professor Azumah Nelson.

Executing its regulatory role over Ghanaian boxing, the GBIMC outlined two primary actions:

Law Enforcement Referral: Formal petitioning of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the threats against NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and pursue legal prosecution.

Internal Disciplinary Proceedings: Immediate commencement of administrative disciplinary measures against Ayitey Powers within the regulatory framework of the sport.

The GBIMC reiterated its resolve to preserve integrity and discipline within the boxing community, urging all stakeholders to resist intimidation and foster respect across the sport.

Ayitey Powers has not yet issued an official public statement regarding the committee’s press release or the allegations.
