Having won the WBO title at super lightweight after a dominant win over Teofimo Lopez, Shakur Stevenson has vacated his belts in the lightweight division.
The latest WBC rankings list the lightweight belt as vacant, which signals that Shakur may have his sights set on the super lightweight division permanently for the meantime.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman stated the belt was made vacant because Shakur and his team did not pay a $120,000 sanctioning fee, as Shakur was competing for a title in another organization .
At 28 years old, Shakur is in his prime and has a lot of fights to choose from. There are options for legacy fights, money fights and even tune-ups.
At 140 pounds, he could potentially face Dalton Smith, Gary Russell, Richardson Hitchins. However, their brotherly relationship makes a fight with Keyshawn Davis highly improbable.
There are still key fights to be made for Shakur at 135 pounds, notably against Tank Davis and Raymond Muratalla.
As a 4 division champion at super lightweight, lightweight, super featherweight and featherweight, Stevenson is charting his way into an elite group of fighters of this era.
He’s already ranked among the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters by multiple organizations like The Ring, Boxrec, ESPN, and TBRB.
I’m sure there will be no shortage of big fights for him regardless of weight class.
