GHANA IS HOSTING TWO MAJOR WABA ANNUAL TOURNAMENTS
Professional boxing is creating champions, enhancing lives, fostering bilateral symmetry, and promoting tourism and investments in the respective nation(s).
Numerous countries, lacking a well-structured plan for the development of youth lives and careers, refrain from investing in boxing.
Some have even belittled the sport itself, referring to it as a trodden horse and the least appealing of entertainment activities.
However, the reality is that boxing is the oldest sport in the world, predating soccer and other sports.
In ancient Greece, boxing found its roots in their culture, with an arena constructed at the Acropolis where, alongside the Marathon, it became the sport of choice to measure the fittest.
In Africa, GHANA, unlike any other nation, has elevated the sport of boxing to an almost religious status. Ghanaians have a deep passion for boxing, and the government has made significant investments in the sport’s development from amateur to professional levels.
There exists a plethora of current and former world champions in Ghana, with David ‘Poison’ Kotey being highly regarded for paving the way for a multitude of boxing champions, followed by Africa’s finest, Prof. Azumah Nelson.
A stream of world champions can be found in Ghana today, including Michael Ansah, the reigning WABA Supreme World Super Featherweight Champion, Saviour Gad, the reigning WABA Supreme Global Super Middleweight Champion, and Abubak Mubarak, the reigning WABA Supreme World Super Middleweight Champion.
To understand how Ghana has reached such a remarkable stage of having numerous boxing champions, one must observe how Ghanaians from all walks of life honor their boxing champions with great esteem.
It is for this reason that Africa’s ONLY world sanctioning body, the World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA), has chosen Ghana as the headquarters for WABA AFRICA.
In this regard, the Board of Directors of WABA has designated Ghana’s International Promoter, Gilbert Mitch Woollams, as its Vice President responsible for WABA AFRICA.
This advancement has provided benefits to Ghana in two significant ways: firstly, it has established the country as the host for the annual WABA Supreme Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus Championship, where two weight categories (Featherweight and Super Featherweight) will be contested each year. These are the same two weight classes that former world champion Prof Azumah Nelson dominated for several years.
Secondly, the prestigious boxing event will be referred to as the “Annual WABA World Championship Series”, where boxers and fighters from across the world will convene for a week filled with intense boxing competitions. No other country in Africa has managed to host such a large-scale boxing tournament; nonetheless, GHANA, being the first independent nation in Africa that paved the way and motivated others to liberate themselves from colonial limitations, is undertaking this initiative, with WABA partnering in this effort.
