BERHANU: MAPUTO, YAOUNDE PRIZE MONEY COMING.

Boxers will soon laugh all the way to the bank, says AFBC President Eyassu Berhanu

Africa Boxing Confederation President (AFBC) Eyassu Berhanu has assured boxers they’ll soon be paid Maputo and Yaounde prize money.

“The process is now at an advanced stage, I’m promising the boxers we’ll pay them,” said Berhanu (pictured).

“It’s unfortunate this delay happened when I was not in office but since I took over I have placed the boxers’ prize money as a top priority because I do believe boxers are the backbone of boxing.”

The Yaounde payment is for last year’s Africa Elite Championships and Maputo payment totalling $177,500 is for 29 boxers from Algeria, Mozambique and Zambia whose prize money was used by former AFBC President Bertrand Mendouga for the launch of their headquarters in Yaounde.

Mendouga’s unilateral decision to use the boxers’ prize money without the approval of the board was widely condemned by boxing stakeholders including the boxers themselves who wondered how their hard-earned money was used without their knowledge.
