Young boxer, Robert Nii Amartey Tagoe aka ‘Hitter Jnr’ who represents Ghana at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal has promised to climb the podium.
Speaking to Yours Truly on Omashi TV, popular boxing show, The Big Fight Night, he disclosed that “I am very lucky and this is an opportunity in a lifetime that I cannot afford to slip, I will make myself, my family and Ghana proud” he said.
As the first boxer to represent Ghana at the first ever Youth Olympic Games on African soil is historic and a record.
13 athletes will represent Ghana and Robert who comes from the Akotoku Academy is going to represent at the 70kg weight category.
He said the challenge is huge because he comes from a boxing community, Gbese near Bukon in Ga Mashie and he must prove.
Tagoe who attended Accra Sempe JHS and wants to take boxing as his career loves to watch Joshua ‘The Hitter’Clottey because of his defensive styles.
“The Grandmaster who won the IBF Welterweight title for Ghana is my idol and master because he has been with me for a long time and he has taught me many tricks in the game of boxing” he expressed.
Like many Ghanaians he loves jollof rice and dances to all sorts of music – “I love all of them, Shatta, Sakodie, Stone Bwoy or Samini or Kojo Antwi”.
Tagoe promised that he will bring the medal to Omashi TV when he wins. The Youth Olympic Games is from October 31 to November 13 with 206 countries taking part in several sporting disciplines.
Ghana will participate in boxing, taekwondo, beach volleyball, table tennis, judo, athletics, badminton and swimming.
Team Ghana will be led by Mr. Evans Yeboah, the Chef de Mission who is very optimistic that Ghana will return with many medals.
This team has been specially selected and they will make Ghana proud” he told Yours Truly at the Legon Sports Stadium during the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) where the athletes were introduced.
“When I held the Games torch, I felt i was holding my medal, and I hope and pray to win a medal for Ghana” he said.
