World Title Hopes: Who’s Ghana’s next boxing champion?

The world title represents the ultimate accomplishment for every boxer.

Throughout Ghana’s history, there have been 11 boxing world champions.

The list includes DK Poison, Nana Koduah, Azumah Nelson, Alfred Kotei, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, Richard Commey, Isaac Dogboe, Joseph Agbeko, Emmanuel Tagoe, and Abigail Quartey.

Ghana hasn’t had a male world champion since Isaac ‘Royal Storm’ Dogbe won the WBO junior featherweight title in 2019.

Though there have been countless continental and intercontinental champions across different sanctioning bodies, yet these are just trinkets when compared to the world title.

It is widely believed that Theophilus Allotey (super flyweight) is the frontrunner to win a world title.

So far, he boasts an undefeated record in 13 fights, backed by a strong amateur history that includes a bronze medal from the 2023 All African Games.

Allotey’s accomplishments include a national title, along with the WBO Africa and WBO Global belts.

His achievements have earned him international recognition, with a top-15 position in the Ring, WBO and IBO rankings.

Emmanuel ‘Gameboy’ Tagoe, a well-known boxer, secured the IBO Lightweight title in 2016. In 2026, he’s not as young as he was a decade ago.

Following his defeat to Ryan Garcia, Tagoe has secured two victories over less formidable rivals.

Considering his status in the lightweight division, winning a world title is still within reach if he can get the right opponents.

John Laryea, who currently holds IBF Africa title, is another boxer to keep an eye on.

To break into the world rankings, John will be required to beat a high-ranking opponent.

Jonathan Tetteh, another undefeated fighter, is quickly rising through the WBO ranks.

Tetteh has all the traits of a future champion, with his blend of charisma, talent, and toughness.

Like other talented fighters, he needs to compete against top-ranked competition to prove himself on the world stage.

There’s no shortage of promising fighters from Ghana. Samuel Takyi, Joseph Commey, Holy Dorgbetor, and Faisal Abubakari, among others, possess the talent to be contenders for a world title in the coming years.
