WABA to honour Professor Azumah Nelson, as boxers fight for special new title belts

The only African-based world sanctioning body, the World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA), has honored Professor Azumah Nelson with a special championship belt dedicated to him.

The Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus will be fought on Easter Saturday, April 4, 2026 in two weight divisions of Featherweight and Super Featherweight to develop skills and talents in the world.

Professor Azumah Nelson is becoming the second boxer in the world to be honored by WABA. Charles Manyuchi Champion Emeritus is dedicated to the first WABA world middleweight champion, Charles Manyuchi, from Zimbabwe.

Professor Azumah Nelson and Charles Manyuchi represent a brand of new Africa. 

According to ace matchmaker Rashid Williams aka Believer, the grand ceremony will take place at the Aborigines Beach Resort at Keta in the Volta Region. 

All the boxers on the bill have prepared ever since the bill was announced.

Mitch Gilbert Wooollams has obtained exclusive rights to promote the country’s inaugural WABA vacant Supreme Championships, and he is executing this in a remarkable manner.

Beninese fighter Justin Hounkpevi is paired with Ghanaian Abubak Mubarak for the vacant WABA Supreme World Super Middleweight championship, while Michael Pappoe faces an opponent yet to be named as Ezekiel Annan pulled out for the vacant WABA Supreme Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus World Super Featherweight Championship, which is dedicated to honoring Africa’s greatest son and the two-weight former world champion, Prof Azumah Nelson.

The event by Aborigines Boxing Promotions will be overseen by the President of WABA, Hon Ky Col Onesmo Alfred McBride Ngowi, who will be present alongside celebrities such as Prof Azumah Nelson, Mitch Gilbert Wooollams, and numerous other notable figures.

Professor Azumah Nelson was a two time world champion at Featherweight and Super Featherweight. He reigned as WBC Champion over a decade. He won the SWAG Sports Personality of the Year 8 times and was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
