
The Black Rockets present gold medals to Director General of NSA
The Black Rockets, Ghana’s Youth Boxing Team, who took part in the 2025 African Youth Boxing Tournament in Conakry, Guinea, where they won three gold medals paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah to formally present their gold medals and cup from the competition.
18 years old Mathias Ashitey (Flyweight-51Kg), George Dowouna (Bantamweight-54Kg) and Desmond Pappoe (Middleweight-75Kg) all won Gold Medals for Ghana, and at the end of the tournament Ghana was third for team placing and got a cup to display.
Assistant coach of the national team, George Martey did a splendid work, leading and training them to achieve the remarkable feat.
Nine countries took part and Ghana’s Black Rocket won three gold medals with an assistant trainer heading the delegation. Tunisia and South Africa paraded many boxers and placed first and second respectively,
Last Monday, the boxers returned to Ghana to a rousing welcome and were driven through the principal streets of Accra to Bukom.
On Tuesday, they presented the medals and cup to the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah where head trainer of the Black Rockets, Coach Charles Quartey introduced the team and winners as well as members of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).
President of the GBF Mr. Bernard Quartey said he believed the boxers were capable of not only participating but winning the ultimate.
Vice President Duada Fuseni who takes care of the Black Rockets said if government and corporate Ghana comes to their aid they can produce more champions.
Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah advised the young champions not to be complacent or swollen-headed but be more committed and dedicated by training harder as the 2026 Commonwealth Games and 2028 Olympic Games Qualifiers are coming up.
The Black Rockets will meet the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee and later on call on the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams.
