Richard Lartey to be granted a rematch against Pettigrew over controversial stoppage
Richard Lartey will receive a rematch against Pettigrew after a controversial stoppage.
Former WBO Africa Heavyweight Champion Richard Lartey delivered a spirited performance in the first two rounds of his highly anticipated bout against Chicago’s own Deontae Pettigrew. The match took place at the Hard Rock Casino in Rockford, Illinois, which is approximately a 20-minute drive from Chicago.
The Ghanaian demonstrated intent, experience, and superiority in the early exchanges, but he was caught by a powerful hook that sent him down to the canvas.
surprisingly, the referee decided to start the count from number 6 instead of 1, which resulted in eventually counting out, hence losing the fight by a technical knockout in round two.
Talks are already underway for a possible rematch since the convern was admitted.
“I don’t understand why the referee started the count at 6. I had a strategy for this fight. You can see that I’m still healthy, strong, and ready for another round.” Lartey retorted when quizzed by Boxing Ghana’s Sammy Ofosuhene.
The Ghanaian displayed pure pigulism artistry, was very fjt and sharp, and had great leg movement throughout the fight as against Deontae, who was relatively static but had power and range advantage.
At the commentary position, you could sense the shivers among the locals who came to support Pettigrew whenever Lartey landed his measured punches, as they repeatedly inflicted damage on the champion.
Boxing Ghana interacted with fans who attended the bout, and by consensus, they all believed that Lartey could have presented Pettigrew with more challenges. They expressed confusion over how the fight ended, especially since they were becoming excited for what they expected to be a thrilling encounter.
The match was broadcast live on andygloTV, an affiliate of Boxing Ghana, as well as on Boxing Ghana’s Facebook page.
Richard Latey is paving the way for emerging Ghanaian boxers to enter the American market.
