Nii Otoe Bruce-Tagoe For 2025 SWAG Journalist Of The Year Award

Accra, Ghana – August 5, 2025

In an unprecedented moment in Ghanaian sports media history, Ebenezer Nii Otoe Bruce-Tagoe has been officially shortlisted as a finalist for the 2025 SWAG Sports Journalist of the Year Award, becoming the first-ever sports photographer to achieve this distinction since the category’s inception.

The announcement was made during a press event held by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) at the Central Hotel, North Ridge, ahead of its 50th Golden Jubilee Awards ceremony scheduled for November. This year’s finalists included some of the country’s most prominent names in sports journalism, Asbella Nana Akua Amakwah, Fiifi Anaman, Yaw Ofosu Larbie, and eventual winner Bill Eshun of Media General. But it was Bruce-Tagoe’s inclusion that marked a clear and historic shift in the recognition of visual journalism in Ghana’s sports ecosystem.

Bruce-Tagoe, the founder of Twenty-Nine Photo Studio, is no stranger to accolades. In 2023, he became the first Ghanaian photographer ever ranked No.1 in Africa in the Action Sports Photography category by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS Africa), a feat he followed with a second consecutive Top 10 ranking in 2024.

“Being shortlisted is not just personal recognition,” Bruce-Tagoe stated. “It’s a victory for every photographer who tells stories without words. This opens the door for the lens to be respected just as much as the pen and the mic.”

For years, the SWAG Journalist of the Year Award has primarily highlighted print, radio, and television broadcasters. The 2025 shortlist, which included a dedicated sports photographer for the first time, signifies a new and inclusive direction, affirming the growing importance of visual storytelling in shaping public perception and national pride in sports.

This recognition cements Bruce-Tagoe’s place not only as a pioneer in Ghana’s sports photography scene but as a bold symbol of evolution in African sports journalism.
