Holy Dorgbetor calls for John Laryea rematch
Holy Dorgbetor, the former national featherweight champion, has expressed interest in a rematch with John Laryea, whom he fought in December last year.
The former IBF Africa champion lost his belt to Laryea by a doctor stoppage TKO in round 7, at the Richards vs Azeez event.
Dorgbetor started the fight strong, successfully scoring three knockdowns in the first four rounds. To control John Laryea’s forward pressure, he employed counter punches and his overhand right.
Laryea gained the upper hand over Holy in rounds 5-7 and scored a knockdown. The doctor at ringside was worried about some bleeding from Holy’s mouth during the break.
After the seventh round had been completed, the doctor decided to stop the fight, due the possibility of internal bleeding.
Despite the disappointment, Dorgbetor was forced to concede the fight that seemed to be going in his favor.
But that was not the only controversy surrounding this fight. KA Sports reported that Holy Dorgbetor was delayed at the entrance for an hour, while John Laryea couldn’t get to the venue in time due to transport issues.
This resulted in both fighters missing out on a prime-time coverage on DAZN as took place after the Richards vs Azeez main event had ended.
Despite the problems that occurred, the fight was thrilling to watch, and it managed to keep a lot of fans engaged, hoping for another one.
In an interview with Dornu’s Corner, Holy stated that he was optimistic about his chances of winning the rematch against John Laryea.
Dorgbetor will hope for a better year in 2026, after experiencing two losses this year, the first one being in the Riyadh season WBC Grand Prix. Prior to his losses, Dorgbetor was undefeated in the featherweight division.
