Three boxers from Ghana will compete at the IBA World Championship in Dubai, from December 2nd to 13th.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) Men’s World Championship is an amateur boxing tournament held every two years that gathers elite boxers from around the world.

This year, the boxing competition will be held in Dubai, with a total of $8 million in prize money to be won by the best performing boxers.

Here is a breakdown of the prize money:

First Place: $300,000 per weight category
Second Place: $150,000 per weight category
Third Place: $75,000 per weight category
Quarterfinalists: $10,000 per weight category

The money awarded will be split between the boxer, their coaches, and their national federation:

50% to the Boxer
25% to the coaches
25% to the National Federation

Ghana’s representation

Throughout the history of the competition, Ghana has only managed to secure one medal. This feat was accomplished by Amon Kotei in the first edition of the tournament in 1974, where he won a bronze medal.

Representing Ghana in this edition are Emmanuel Mawuli (featherweight), Ebenezer Ankrah (lightweight), and Mohammed Amadu (bantamweight), who will bear the nation’s hopes of winning a trophy.

Mohammed Amadu won a gold medal at the All-African Games in 2024. He aims to repeat this achievement and inspire his teammates to win medals again this year.

Ebenezer Ankrah participated in the 2024 IBA Youth World Championships, advancing to the Round of 32 before his elimination from the competition. This year, he’ll aim to use that experience to secure a medal.

Emmanuel Mawuli, having already begun his professional career, has a record of 13-0 with 10 KOs which indicates his potential in the sport. With the advantage of professional experience, 20-year-old will be bringing his best on board.

Not only does a successful performance offer financial benefits, but it also allows the participating boxers to gain more recognition and hopefully break Ghana’s 50-year medal drought in the competition.
