GBF National Individual Championship Spectacles Boxing Artistry And Excitement At The Bukom Boxing Arena

The finals of the 2026 National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship was magnificently organised by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) last Friday evening at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The night however could not have passed without shocks and surprises.

Wisdom Boxing Club who presented five finalists won just one gold, while the three Black Panthers’ boxers won all their final matches.

Although no award was given to the best trainer, Coach Okoe of Black Panthers feel they deserve that recognition.

The GBF President Dauda Fuseni was impressed with the performances of the young boxers and congratulated them. He urged them to brave up for more challenges ahead when they join the national team.

The finals of the 2026 National Individual Championship was graced by Nii Ashiefie Papayinra 1 aka Ben Nunoo Mensah, former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and development chief of the Ga State, Hon Alfred Kotey Ashie, Mr. Ernest Danso Chef de Mission of Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and President of Ghana Softball and Baseball who is also third vice president of the GOC, Nana Adu Mankata, President of Sports For All and member of the GOC board and Nana Amponsh Adu-Gyamfi, Kyidomhene of Assin Achiase in the Assin South District Assembly.

Also in attendance were some diplomats from the French and Spain embassies and members of the Chinese business community in Ghana.

The event started with the Super Heavyweight-92+ which saw Isaac Asiedu (C.Q.B.F) defeating experienced Daniel Plange (Jamestown Boxing Club) to grab the gold medal. The 17 years old boxer told Yours Truly his family came to watch him and everyone is proud of him.

He expressed that qualifying to the Black Bombers is a big deal and training with them will be more than an experience.

Asiedu hopes to gain some experience and win for his country at the amateur level before turning professional.

The climax of the National Individual Amateur Championship was the Light Flyweight-48kg contest in which small boy danger Daniel Amoo of Sea View shocked Samuel Plange after he was awarded the slot to replace Lionel Owoo of Wisdom Boxing Gym.

The biggest surprise of the night was Flyweight-51kg George Dowuona of Will Power, a member of the national youth team, losing to Ibrahim ‘Boosu’ Doku of the Black Panthers.

Bantamweight-45kg Caleb Mensah (Wisdom Boxing Gym) once again lost to Mathias Ashitey (Black Panthers), while Featherweight-57kg Amadu Mohammed (Sea View) defeated Reginald Lamptey (C.Q.B.F).

Lightweight-60kg James Okoe (Wisdom Boxing Gym) could not turn the Arena upside down as he promised against Ebenezer Ankrah (Black Panthers)

The Light Welterweight-63.5kg was an all Wisdom affair and Henry Owusu (Wisdom Boxing Gym) lost to experienced and widely exposed Abdul Wahid Omar (Wisdom Boxing Gym) 

In an interesting Welterweight-67kg fray, Issah Okine (Wisdom Boxing Gym) could not live to his promise of doing better than his dad as he lost to Precious Akai Nettey of Attoh Quarshie Boxing Gym who celebrated his birthday in style with his fans. 

Light Middleweight-71kg Solomon Sackey (Akotoku) beat Zakari Kamoko (Sea View), while Middleweight-75kg Khalid (Fit Square) lost to Desmond Pappoe (Jamestown Boxing Club).

Light Heavyweight-81kg Mubarak Amarh (Seconds Out) promised and delivered over Abdul Wahab (Sonia), while Cruiserweight -86kg Dennis John Dugbenu (Seconds Out) beat Bernard Kotey (Sea View) in an action packed bout.

Twellium Ghana Ltd, producers of Verna Water and Rush Energy Drink presented gift vouchers to the most outstanding boxers.

The championship was supported by the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Cartel Rentals, GAMADA, Base Pharmacy and The Gym.
