Boxing Ghana celebrates seasoned coach Kwatelai Quartey

Boxing Ghana celebrated some Ghanaian boxing pioneers and heroes over the past weekend during its fourth edition of the end of year awards

Among them was Kwatelai Quartey, a longtime boxing trainer whose contribution to the sport spans across decades.

During the 1970s, Kwatelai Quartey played a role by helping to secure funding from the Sports Ministry to restore the ‘Bukom Boxing Gym, where he served as a trainer.

The impact of Quartey is evident in both amateur and professional boxing, as he is credited with the development of boxers such as Alfred Kotey, Joshua Clottey, James Armah, Bukom Banku, and former WBA welterweight champion Ike Quartey.

Currently, Quartey is directing his attention towards amateur boxing, where he is keen on highlighting the importance of discipline and resilience among his fighters. In addition, he has advocated for the development and exposure of young, amateur boxers.

He believes that nurturing top fighters requires starting at the grassroots level.

Additionally, Naa Amerley Turkson, a pioneer in Ghana’s female boxing scene, was also honored at the Boxing Ghana awards. Longstanding ring officials Edward Addo (timekeeper) and Ataa Eddie Pappoe (judge) were also honored.

Freeman Francis Mensah, known as Promoterhene, was a boxing promoter for many decades, and he received a posthumous award for his significant contribution to the development of boxing in Ghana.
