Abdul Wahid Omar reveals why he still fights in the amateur ranks – Glasgow 2026 is gold time
2016 Olympian and two times Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Abdul Wahid Omar of the Wisdom Boxing Club says he wants to claim an Olympic medal before quitting the amateur ranks.
Speaking on Omashi TV flagship show, The Big Fight Night hosted by legendary sports journalist, Sammy Heywood Okine, he said going to the big international games like Olympics and Commonwealth makes you very popular and known by officials and organisers.
“It makes you special and confident to meet top boxers and officials from different parts of the world to compete, other nations bring experienced athletes and they perform better than the first timers” he said.
According to Omar, representing Ghana at the Games has been beneficial to him a lot and he gives much credit to Coach Dr. Ofori Asare and all members of the Wisdom Boxing Club.
Abdul Wahid Omar 32, said everyone has an ambition and he chose to remain as an amateur for some time to make record and history.
So far he has represented Ghana and won medals at the Glasgow and Birmingham Commonwealth Games and also the only boxer at the Brazil 2016 Olympic Games.
He is still hungry for success and thanks the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and international Olympic Committee (IOC) as well as National Sports Authority (NSA) and the government of Ghana for the opportunities.
Omar has qualified for the final of the 2026 National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship and he is leaving no stone unturned with the aim of claiming victory and representing Ghana again. The target is LA 2028.
He advised boxers to be disciplined and obedient to their coaches and elders.
He urged them to train regularly and seriously.
He commended his colleagues from Wisdom Boxing Club who made it to the finals and urged them to go all out for the ultimate.
He also stressed that he is not going to give his opponent any chance though they both represented the Wisdom Gym and he congratulated the new Ghana Boxing Federation leadership for bringing back the Individual Championships to select the best amateur boxers for the Black Bombers.
The final is slated for February 27at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
Abdul Wahid Omar was accompanied by Coach Eben Quaye, also of Wisdom Boxing to the prime show on Omashi TV.
He was optimistic they will sweep most of the gold medals.
